Periyar National Park – is a protected area and nature reserve in Indian state of Kerala, God’s Own Country. It is set high mountains of Western Ghats at the boarder of Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The protected area of the park covers the area of 925 square kilometer. This park is also called Thekkady Wildlife Park. It is situated at the distance of about 100 km from Alleppey, 110 km from Madurai (Tamil Nadu) and 120 km from Kochi.

Flora in Periyar National Park
The Periyar National Park is known for rich flora. About 75% of the Periyar protected area is covered with natural evergreen or semi-evergreen rain forest. The park has tall tropical trees. The park is also home to some medicinal plants.

Fauna in Periyar National Park
There are about 62 different species of mammals found in this park. There are about 53 tigers in the park. The park is noted for big population of Indian elephants. There are bout 1000 elephants in this park. Gaur, horse deer, barking deer, spotted deer, mouse deer, Indian wild dogs, mongoose, foxes, leopards, etc also can be seen in the park.

The park is also home to a variety of birds, reptiles amphibians, and insects. Boating in Periyar Lake is a unique and cheery way to explore the famous Periyar National Park.

How to reach Periyar
The most convenient base to visit Periyar is Kochi. Kochi is well connected by air, rail and roads.
