Kaziranga National Park
Kaziranga National Park is located on the bank of Brahmputra River in Golaghat and Nagaon districts of Assam. The park is spread in area of approximately 430 square km. This park has been declared as World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The park is known to house world’s two-third population of one-horned rhinoceroses. It is also famous its tigers and elephants. Kaziranga was declared as national park in 1974 and Tiger Reserve in 2006.
Flora and fauna in the Park
Kaziranga National Park has high population of tigers and leopards. One horned rhinoceros are highlights of the park. Horde of elephants can also be spotted often in the park. Indian one horned rhinoceros, tigers, leopards, elephants, barasingha, barking deer, wild boar, otters, hog deer, golden apes, capped apes, monkeys, wild buffaloes, etc are other common animals found in the park. The park also has pythons, snakes, monitor lizards, turtles and other reptiles and amphibians.
The park is also famous for bird watching tour. Some of the common birds in the park are fishing eagle, swamp partridge, jungle fowl, goose, pelicans, whistling teal, pelicans, parakeets, ducks, etc.
The park has for distinct types of flora: alluvial grassland, alluvial savanna woodland, tropical moist mixed deciduous forest, and tropical semi evergreen forests. Elephant grass mainly dots the parks. Wild flowers are also found in the park.
Best Time to Visit
November to early April is the best time to visit the park.
Getting There
Nearest airport is at Jorhat (at 97 Km away from the park). From Jorhat tourists can get taxi to connect to the park. Park is also connected by railway route.
The nearest railway station is Furkating, situated 75 km away from Kaziranga.
