Kanha National Park is positioned in Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is full of verdant vegetations and is one of the picturesque national parks in India. This park was the inspiration behind Rudyard Kipling's unforgettable creation Jungle Book. Earlier it was sanctuary and was declared as national park in 1955. The park extends over an area of over 1,940 km². Due to favorable habitat of tigers, it was declared as tiger reserve later on. This 'Tiger Country' is the ideal home for both predator and prey.

Flora and Fauna in the Park
The major fauna found in the park are tiger, sloth bear, Bengal tigers and leopards. Some other commonly found species are bison, gaur, sambar, chital, barking deer, black deer, black buck, chousingha, nilgai, wild panther, jackal fox, porcupine, hyena, jungle cat, python, pea fowl, hare, monkey, mongoose and leopard. The park also has aqua fauna and reptiles.

The park has more than 300 species of birds. Teals, pond herons, peacock, fowl, parakeets, green pigeons, cuckoos, papihas, bee-eater, pigeons, warblers, kingfishers, woodpeckers, finches, owls, fly catchers, parrots, etc are the common species found in the park.

The park has about 600 species of flowering plants. Common floras of the park are sal, saja, tendu, achar, bamboo, etc. grassland meadows are also found in the park.

Best Time to Visit
It is difficult to point particular season as the best for tourist. However it is good to visit during the months of April to June and November to January. The park is closed from July to Mid-November due to monsoon.

Getting There
Nagpur is nearest airport and is connected by Mumbai with domestic airline. Visit Mumbai from any part of India and take domestic flight to Nagpur. Jabalpur is nearest railway station. Kanha has regular bus service from Nagpur and Jabalpur.
