Bandhavgarh National Park
The Bandhavgarh National Park is located in Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the most popular national parks in India. The forest of Bandhavgarh was declared as national park in 1968. The park is spread in area of 105 km² containing wide diversity of flora and fauna. The park is famous for highest density of Bengal tiger in the world. The park lies in tropical monsoon climatic zone and is largely dominated by Sal trees and Bamboo plants. Owing to high population of tigers in the park it was declared as tiger reserve under Project Tiger, 1993.
Flora and Fauna in the Park
Bandhavgarh National Park is rich in flora and fauna. It is known for exhibiting large biodiversity. The park is known for housing large population of Bengal tiger. The park also has good numbers of leopard, deer, chital, sambar, nilgai, chinkara jungle cat, etc. This park is also very rich in avifauna. More than 150 species of birds dwell in the park. Pigeons, hornbills, parakeets, owls, minivets, woodshrikes, flycatchers are some of the common birds found in the park.
Sal trees and bamboo plants are the main flora grown in Bandhavgarh. Grassland meadows are also found in the park which creates wonderful landscape.
Best Time to Visit
The period from December to February is the best to visit the park. However, one can also freely visit the park in the months of April, May and June. In these warmer months one can easily spot tigers and leopards. The park remains closed during monsoon season.
Getting There
People can easily visit the park as it is connected with railway line. The park is at about 32 km distance from Umaria Railway station. One can get direct train to Umaria from almost all major cities of India. From Umaria one can easily visit the park by bus or jeep that runs frequently to help people get there in the park.
The nearest airports are Jabalpur and Khajuraho. There is road transportation between from Jabalpur
and Khajuraho to Umaria and one can easily get into the park from these cities by bus.
